August 2013 Newsletter

 AUGUST NEWSLETTER

Dear Families,
The new school year has begun! We have several changes at the K-8 this year with our student schedules. These changes have been brought about as a result of two factors: Common Core State Standards and the new state RTI model. Students in grades kindergarten through 3rd grades have the first 90 minutes during the day for uninterrupted reading/language arts. Fourth grade through 8th grade are departmentalized with academic periods of approximately 100 minutes in length. Related arts periods are now 45 minutes in length. I have included a list of resources for the Common Core State Standards and the upcoming PARCC Assessments on the back of the newsletter.
Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. each morning. Anyone arriving to school after 8:00 a.m. is tardy. We ask that all parents and visitors exit the building when the 8:00 a.m. bell rings. Students are expected to stay the entire school day, which ends at 3:00 p.m.
We have some incentive programs for attendance and grades that are sponsored by the faculty and staff here at the K-8. Students who are present from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. each nine day during a nine weeks period will be eligible for a drawing for a gift card. Students who are on the A honor roll will be eligible for a drawing for a gift card. The classroom in each grade, which has the best rate of attendance will have a treat incentive each nine weeks. This is based upon students who is in school from 8:00 a.m until 3:00 p.m.
There are some changes in the lunchroom policy this year. Student lunchroom accounts will be sent home with the students at least twice per month. Please ask your child/children to make sure they bring those home. If students owe more than $25.00, they will not be allowed to get extras or go on field trips. Prices this year are as follows: lunch full price -$1.75, reduced price-$.40, breakfast full price $1.10, reduced price-$.30. There is more information about the charge policy in the Student/Parent Handbook on page 9.
Student/Parent Handbooks are going home on August 13th and 14th. Please note the Warning Board Contract on the back of my letter and Warning Board Behavior Management Plan on page 22 and example on the back of page 22. This applies to grades 5-8.
We ask that all students are at school by 8:00 a.m. and students stay until 3:00 p.m. It is very all students are in classes the entire day.
