Giving Thanks for Families and Friends

During the month of November, our school would like to celebrate the theme Giving Thanks for Family and Friends with some learning activities, contests and displays. Below is a list of our planned events.
If you have questions you can see Ms. Alice or Ms. Delilah, the two turkeys in charge of these events!

Homemade Turkey or Scarecrow Contest
Create with your family a homemade turkey or scarecrow and bring it to school for display. It can be made from any type of material. There will be prizes for the best! There will be 2 categories for this contest. One category will be 12 inches and under (table top turkeys and scarecrows). The second category will be above 12 inches. These will need to be brought to school on November 12th so they can be judged and displayed.

Walls of Learning
Ms. Alice will be creating walls of learning during this time period. One will be Turkey Trivia and the other will be the Story of Thanksgiving. There will be questions to answers each day, so read and learn!

Cornucopia Coloring Contest
Pick up your entry form on Ms. Alice's door and turn it in by Nov.19th. Adults can enter too, so teachers grab one and students take one home to your parents!

Guess the Candy Corn
See if you can guess how much candy corn is in the container outside Ms. Alice's door. Listen for the announcement that tells you when this contest is ready!

Turkey Table Manners
Ms. Patricia Garrett will be visiting with classes and reminding them about good table manners and showing how to set the Thanksgiving Feast Table!

Thomas the Turkey
Teddy T. Bear was a huge sucess, but now we have Thomas T. Turkey who will be taking his place! Thomas will be coming home with students and asking them to sit down with the family and make a list of the things your family is thankful for. Thomas will come with instructions and a page to write on. These lists will be displayed in the hallways. If you could send a family picture along with your list that would be great. You can also e-mail that picture to gibsond2@k12tn.net.

Wild Turkeys
Ms. Patti's art students will be creating wild turkeys. She will display them in the halls and on her blog http://mizpattisartroom.blogspot.com
Ms. Cross will be reading turkey stories in the library, too!

Send a favorite Thanksgiving recipe to us!
Send us your favorite Thanksgiving recipe to us and we will post it on a blog we have created just for that purpose:http:// k8cooks.blogspot.com
You can send a hand written copy or e-mail it to gibsond2@k12tn.net.

Sampling Day
Mrs. Lisa Cummings from School Coordinated Health will host a food sampling day on Nov.18th. She will have some tasty, healthy foods for us to try.

Harvest and Movie Day Re-Scheduled

Because the weather forecast for this Friday is rainy and cold, Harvest and Movie Day have been re-scheduled for Thursday, October 30th. The movie day is a reward for doing so well in the can drive. While some students are at Movie Time in the gym, others will be at the Fairgrounds for Harvest Day where activities will include face painting, hay rides, jack-o-lantern decorating contests, etc.

Sports and 8th Grade Proofs

The 8th graders pictures and the sports pictures came in today. Inside each of the envelopes is an order form. The proofs for the group pictures are in my classroom for viewing. Orders are due back on November 18th. The fall portrait order should be here next week. If you have any questions you can call me at school or e-mail me gibsond2@k12tn.net

Winners!

This group of students were the winners of the coloring and poster contest for Child Health Week. The younger students colored a picture and the older ones designed a poster showing children involved in physical activities. Each student won a ten dollar gift certificate. Our second blogging class for parents and teachers will be Tuesday night October 21st from 6-7:30 in the K-8 computer lab. You are welcome to join us even if you did not make it to the first one. We covered the basic things involved in constructing a blog last session and this time we will look at some other features and share some ideas about what to add on your site. We did create a group blog called One Size Fits All. You can visit us there and see what type of things we blog about. If you would like to be added to our blog just drop an e-mail to myself gibsond2@k12tn.net or Misty Dowdy dowdym1@k12tn.net and we will make you an author too!

All students enjoyed a bag of popcorn and a soda as a reward for their efforts in the can drive. The kindergarten students took their annual ride on top of the firetruck. It was a great way to kick-off fall break!

Sad News from Science Class

I am sad to report that Miss Elizabeth's 5th & 6th grade science classes lost their pet lizard GiGi this week. The fifth graders held a ceremony and prepared this final resting place near the school. The store who sold the lizard has agreed to replace it next week.
One of the kindergarten students Cole, wrote this song for the lizard:
Ohh lizard ohh lizard why did you die? Why couldn't you stay for a longer while? So now I sing a little ding, in your memory!
Noah, one of the fifth grade students, performed the song during the graveside service.

Rain Delays

The rain caused us to be unable to make football, softball, golf and eighth grade pictures today. They are just postponed until Thursday morning. Football players need to bring their uniforms. The softball coaches are bringing the shirts and the golfers say they are wearing black shirts. Eighth graders should be prepared for their outside casual picture.
Band and jump rope teams will have photos on October 22.

A Note About the Can Drive

Our “Can Drive” begins today, October 1st, and continues through Friday, Oct 3rd. Our goal is 5,000 cans. We will have a school wide popcorn party on the afternoon of Friday, October 10th if we reach our goal. The classroom that collects the most cans in Pre-k through 2nd grade, 3rd grade through 5th grade, and 6th grade through 8th grade will get a pizza party. Canned items high in protein such as tuna, chicken, Spam, and beans along with small jars of peanut butter are some of the items in greatest need.
