Moving On. . .

Thirty-four years ago a young girl, fresh out of college walked back into the high school where she had been a student and became one of the faculty members. She was filled with youthful enthusiasm and ready to start doing what she had always wanted--be a teacher.
Last Friday, she left after teaching three generations of students and at some point all grades K-12.

That girl, of course, was me and I would like to think that I never lost my youthful enthusiasm!
I started this blog in 2008 hoping to give parents a place to go for information when they ask the age old question, "What did you do at school today?" and then heard the reply, "nothing."
Six hundred posts later, I'm here to say good-bye.

I'm leaving the blog with a promise from Miss Rebekah that she will take good care of it and provide you with information and of course, your favorite, lots of pictures. You may have noticed that she has made the last couple of posts. She is full of youthful enthusiasm, and will do a terrific job.

You'll now find me reading a book, or being Parker's Nana or doing lots of interesting things. Maybe Miss Rebekah will let me guest blog from time to time!

In the meantime you can still e-mail me (gibsond2@k12tn.net), friend me on facebook or look at my personal blog to see what I'm up to!
I thank each of you for all the compliments and "thank yous" that I have received from the K-8 blog readers. You made my day when I opened my e-mail and read your comments or when I met you in person and you had praise for the blog.

Thanks,
Miss Delilah

Christmas Parties

Today students and teachers enjoyed a Party day, as the last full day before Christmas break. Many students brought presents and snacks to trade and enjoy in their classes, the 6th graders brought breakfast for their class, and each student was given a gift bag which contained fruit. Needless to say it has been an eventful day. To top it all off we had a very special visitor show up this afternoon! It was definitely a day enjoyed by many!

Free Educational Apps

Ms Rebekah and I spent part of last week at a technology conference learning about all sorts of interesting things. One session we attended was conducted by a couple of educators from Memphis who shared with us the free apps they use in their ipod touch labs.
If you have an ipod touch or ipad you might want to add some apps that would help students practice and review skills. The list can be found here.
There are two pages to this link so be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom.

Remember when you visit the apps store that iphone apps will usually work with both iphones and ipods, but ipad apps work only with the ipad. You have to create an itunes account to download any of these applications.

Jump Rope Team and Cheerleader Pictures

The K-8 Jump Rope Team and the Junior High Cheerleaders will have their team and individual pictures made on Wednesday, December 8th.
These two groups need to bring their uniforms to school on that day.

Word of the Day

Here is another word from my high school English teacher's vocabulary lists.

inkling
1 a slight indication or suggestion : hint, clue

2: a slight knowledge or vague notion

Thanksgiving Feast

The Food Network, Paula Dean, Rachel Ray nor Bobby Flay can compete with the hard working lunch ladies of Pickett County K-8, because yesterday they fed approximately 875 people a delicious Thanksgiving meal. It's been a tradition as long as anyone can remember, that we invite students' family members to eat a Thanksgiving or Christmas lunch here in our cafeteria.
Our cooks were at work that morning before daylight and for your information here's just a few of the things they prepared:
36 turkeys
8 hams
17 pans of dressing
900 rolls
976 yams

So I would like to say THANKS to Marcia, Janice, Patty, Lori, Bloss and Janet for keeping everyone fed--everyday!

In just two weeks, December 9 to be exact, they are going to prepare their next feast--Christmas Lunch and feed the masses again!
