September Newletter

PICKETT COUNTY K-8 SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

Dear families,

We are very excited about some of the things going on in the month of September at the K-8. The Twin Lakes Telephone Directory Recycling Campaign is still in full swing. The only Twin Lakes Directory not accepted is the new 2011. The K-8 receives 50 cents per copy turned in and the classroom that collects the most books will receive $100.00 and a pizza party. The recycling campaign ends September 30th.

We are also in the middle of our yearly cookie dough sales fundraiser. If grades 5-8 sell 800 items, I will get to wear a new hairdo for a day. Please help me get my new do.

The money raised helps with the cost of copy machine maintenance and repair along with purchasing toner. One toner cartridge costs us $165.00 and that is buying in bulk to receive the best price. We greatly appreciate all the efforts to help us with our fundraiser. The cookie dough sales end September 12th.

I had included information about the U.S. Cellular contest in last month’s newsletter. We now have more information and hopefully we have some strategies to help the K-8 win. Between September 9th and October 6th, anyone 18 years or older can visit the local U.S. Cellular store (in the same shopping complex as the Dollar General Store) and ask an associate for a code to vote for their favorite school at uscellular.com. You can go by and pick up a new code everyday of the contest and vote all codes each day. If you do not want to vote your code/codes each day, simply write your e-mail address on the code card and send it to school with your child. I have enlisted the help of several to enter the votes each day. Please encourage other family members to go by and pick up codes every day (grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc.). I really believe the K-8 can win the $150,000.00 prize with the help of the entire community.

One part of our strategy to win is by having two contests. The first is between classrooms. The classroom in grades Pre-K-4 and in grades 5-8 that turn in the most code cards will receive $1,500.00 each. Second place classrooms will receive $1000.00 each and third place classrooms will receive $500.00 each if we win the $150,000.00 grand prize. The other contest is between students in grades Pre-K-4 and grades 5-8. The students who turn in the most code cards will receive $1000.00 each. Second place students will receive $750.00 each and third place students will receive $500.00 each if we win the $150,000.00 grand prize. In the event we are one of the 17 runner up schools and we win $50,000.00 the prizes will be as follows: First place classrooms will receive $750.00, second place classroom $500.00, and third place classrooms will receive $250.00. First place students will receive $300.00, second place students will receive $200.00, and third place students will receive $100.00. In the event there are ties within the contests, names will be drawn for the winners.

Another part of the strategy is that code cards can be picked up at out of town U.S. Cellular stores as well. Example: If you go to Livingston or Cookeville, you can go by the Byrdstown store and pick up a code card, go by the Livingston store and pick up a code card, and go by the Cookeville store and pick up a code card all on the same day. All code cards can be voted on that day and every day that follows during the contest. I have included a list of stores in the area.

Remember, if you want us to vote your code/codes everyday, send those to school with your e-mail address written on the card and we will make sure it is voted. All cards turned in to teachers will be voted daily until the contest ends. PLEASE HELP US WIN $150,000.00.

The local U.S. Cellular store, Business Express, located at 8500 Hwy 111, Ste 100 in Byrdstown will have a Calling All Communities Kick Off on Saturday, September 10th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Festivities will include games, face painting, bounce house, free hot dogs and drinks, giveaways and door prizes. Please go by and join the fun. Most of all pick up your voting code for the day. NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY!

I had addressed the early picking up of students in the afternoon in last month’s newsletter. There are still too many students being picked up early. We understand the occasional doctor’s appointment and the like, but we also see that it has become a habit for some. The school day does not end until 3:00 p.m. Car riders are not released until 3:10 p.m. If you want to avoid the traffic, please pick up your child/children at 3:25 p.m. We are always here until 3:30 p.m.

In the mornings, if you take your child/children to their classrooms, it is a state law that you sign in when you enter the building. The sign in sheet is in the front lobby on the table as you enter to your right. Also, parents do not need to be going down the hallways in the afternoon to pick up their child/children. If you have to pick up your child early, go by the office and have the secretary to call for your child. If you need to speak with a teacher, please wait until after the car riders have been called at 3:10 p.m. At the end of the day, teachers are trying to get students ready to go home and make sure all students are getting where they are supposed to that afternoon. Please do not go to your child’s room before we call for car riders
