Hills and Hollers

About four years ago Mrs. Patti and I collaborated on a project called Hills and Hollers. Our goal in using this theme was to make students more aware of the Appalachian culture that surrounds them and develop a pride in their heritage. This year we have decided to bring Hills and Hollers back! We want to study and complete activities that focus on our own town, county and state.

We have several projects planned and other teachers are joining us. Miss Alice is helping us with decorating the halls with our work and Mrs. Jolly has some special things planned for her fourth graders. In the library Miss Rhuveda Cross is making quilt blocks with some of her students.

One of our first projects focuses on Grandparents. In the K-4 hallway we have started a display, which includes writings, and drawings that students have made about their grandparents. We would love to include photos in this area. Students in grades three and up are working on these writings in the computer lab. If your younger student would like to make his/her own page to hang in our display, we would be glad to have it. I’ll keep you updated with pictures as the display grows or you are welcome to come look at the display yourself.

Be sure to remember your grandparents on September 13th—it’s National Grandparents Day!
